UGC Course Renovation Timeline
Enhancing Safety, Playability & Sustainability
2023: Identifying Safety Concerns & Planning Solutions
- 2017: Concerns were raised about errant tee shots on the original par-four 6th hole, which runs alongside a residential road. This posed a safety risk for pedestrians, vehicles, and homeowners.
- Mid 2017: The club implemented a temporary forward tee on the 6th hole to minimize risks while exploring a permanent solution.
- Late 2023: UGC engaged Lobb + Partners and Oliver Tubb Design, renowned golf course architects, to assess the course layout and propose a redesign.
2024: Construction & Course Adjustments Begin
- Spring 2024:
- The redesign plan was approved:
- The 6th hole would be converted into a par three to eliminate safety concerns.
- The 7th hole would be extended to a par four to maintain the course’s par-72 layout.
- Permits and approvals were secured, and construction preparations began.
- Summer 2024:
- Goodwin Golf, a leading course construction firm, began work on the new 6th hole.
- A temporary hole was introduced to ensure golfers could still play a full 18-hole round during construction.
- Fall 2024:
- Major earthwork and shaping of the new 6th hole were completed.
- Drainage and irrigation systems were installed to support the redesigned layout.
- Initial seeding and turf establishment began, allowing the grass to take root before winter.
2025: Seventh/Eighth Hole Redesign & Sustainability Enhancements
- Spring 2025:
Play Interruptions on east end of the golf course:
- The newly designed par-three 6th hole (#7 on the card for 2025) will open for play starting in early May.
- For the least interruption to the flow of play during construction of hole 7, we have elected to also close half of the par 5 8th hole and use temporary tees to play as a par 3 during 2025 and into early 2026.
Why alter Hole #8 this year?
- Ensure the flow of play and safety of golfers in the area.
- Opportunity to begin the modern-day irrigation system.
- Robust irrigation system for more efficient use of water and better coverage (moving from old 2-line system to new 3-line system)
- Re-design and alignment of cart path and tee boxes
- Re-design and new fairway bunker placement
Work will begin on converting the existing par-three 7th hole into a par four by extending the fairway and modifying bunkers.
- Sustainability efforts will include introducing native grasses in non-playable areas to reduce water usage.
- Summer 2025:
- Final shaping and grow-in phase for the 7th hole.
- Course improvements will focus on enhancing turf health, refining tee boxes, and improving drainage.
- Spring 2026:
- The newly redesigned 7th hole will open, officially completing the renovation.
- A grand reopening event may be planned to celebrate the improvements.
Beyond 2025: Long-Term Course Enhancements
- Ongoing monitoring and adjustments to ensure the new layout enhances playability.
- Continued sustainability initiatives to reduce water consumption, improve turf conditions, and maintain course quality.
