Having been around since 1929, University Golf Club is a traditional golf course with long, narrow fairways and towering old growth trees. It is only minutes away from the city but it feels like you’re in the country and away from it all. The golf course is accessible to all levels of players and can be walked or driven at your leisure. With 9 minute tee time intervals, there is no rush for you to enjoy this scenic course. Now for some history…
In 1929, John Boyd obtained a 40 year government lease on 120 acres of University Endowment Lands and opened the public course named the Westward Ho! Golf Course. In 1960, Boyd handed over the lease to his oldest daughter, Lillian Baldwin, who held it until it expired in 1970. The province then operated the course from 1970-1985.
In 1985, a group of Vancouver businessmen headed by Robin Lecky and late Shaughnessy Professional Jack McLaughlin were awarded a 25 year lease on the land. Members of this group included sports commentator and promoter Greg Douglas and his partner Ron Gardner, UBC Director of Athletics, Bob Hindmarch, former Shaughnessy G&CC manager Bill Gillespie, engineer and developer Ivan Kraemer and chartered accountant Bill Humphries. The lease has since been controlled by David Ho.
The group changed the name to University Golf Club. They built a lavish clubhouse and driving range in 1985, relocated headquarters behind the old second green and modernized the rearranged course. The original clubhouse by the University Blvd gats at 10th and Blanca remains in place, completely renovated and restored as the BC Golf Museum.
The clubhouse has more of a private club feel, with two spacious banquet rooms (both with outdoor patios). If you are looking to shop, the Golf Shop has a great selection of TaylorMade and Adidas men’s and women’s fashions for on and off the course, as well as any equipment you may require. If you are looking to dine, the Westward Ho! Public House and Grill room has a casual west coast vibe, with river rock accents and a scenic patio overlooking the 10th tee and the gorgeous gazebo garden. The menu is raved about and has something for everyone.
We’re glad you’ve come to explore the University Golf Club and hope you enjoy your visit.
